How To Set Translation Formality

What Is Translation Formality?

Translation formality refers to the tone used in translated text. This can be formal or informal, depending on the target language and audience.

The tone used in software translations often varies by language. For example, Spanish translations are often informal to create a casual feel, while German typically uses a formal tone to meet cultural expectations.

How PTC Sets Translation Formality

PTC selects the best formality level for each language based on what works for most software projects. These default settings save time and align with common expectations for each language, but they don’t affect your translation quality score.

In most cases, you don’t need to adjust the defaults. However, there may be cases when a different formality level might produce better results.

How to Change the Translation Formality for Your Project

You can change translation formality settings for any language that supports it:

  1. From your dashboard, go to Settings → Translation settings
  2. Change the formality setting for any language you need
  3. Click Update to save your changes
PTC lets you set formal or informal tones for supported languages

Once you update the formality settings, PTC will use them for all new translations you create in the future.
