How To Set Translation Formality

PTC selects the best formality level for each language based on what works best for most projects. Some languages give you the flexibility to pick a formal or informal tone. If you’d like to adjust these settings, this guide walks you through the steps.

What Is Translation Formality

Translation formality refers to the level of formality or informality used in translating text, matching the cultural and situational context of the target language audience.

For software translations certain languages tend to work best with certain formality: for example, Spanish translations are usually done informally in software projects, whereas German translations typically use a formal tone.

PTC uses these defaults for all new projects. In most cases, you do not need to change these settings.

However, there may be cases when a different formality level might produce better results.

How to Change Formality

Formality settings are under Settings → Translation settings.

The list there includes any languages in your project that support different formality.

PTC lets you set formal or informal tones for supported languages

Switch formality for any languages you need, and click Update for the new settings to apply.

Note: Updating formality will only affect new translations. If you want to get all-new translations of the entire project with the new formality settings, go to the Translations page and click Retranslate.

Translation formality does not affect the translation score.
